Skin-Care Tips for Teenage Boys

Teenage boys need to pay attention to their skin. Here's the lowdown on skin care tips for teenage boys.

All of the sudden, boys’ skin changes drastically. During puberty, teenage boys are often plagued with pimples, blemishes, acne, rashes, oily patches, and other telltale signs of male adolescence. More than an inconvenience, teenage boys’ skin can cause serious damage to their surprisingly delicate self-esteem. There are, however, simple steps teenage boys can take to address their skin care during puberty. Here are the best and most important tips for teenage boys:

  • Keep your face clean. This means doing more than washing your face in the shower — in fact, never use bar soap on your face. There are several facial-cleansing products that work perfectly on teenage boys’ skin. Gentle ones are better than those that require hard scrubbing, and unscented are better than scented since fragrance can cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin. Make face cleansing a twice-daily regimen.
  • If acne is the issue, use an over-the-counter acne treatment, or consult a dermatologist for a recommendation.
  • Keep hands off your face! Don’t pick, pull, tug, pop, scratch, or touch blemishes at any time. Touching your face spreads oils across the face and promotes the growth of bacteria.
  • If you’re shaving, experiment with different types of razors, as boys’ skin during the teenage years may react better to some blades and brands than others. And make sure the blades are clean and sharp.
  • Use sunscreen. This helps your skin during your teenage years and beyond.
  • Moisturize your face even if it’s oily — just use a light oil-free moisturizer after you wash and dry your face.
  • Spread an exfoliating mask on your face weekly. They’re not just for girls! They remove dead skin cells and blemishes along with them.
  • If you have acne on your back, try switching to a dandruff shampoo. Oftentimes acne on the back can be reduced or eliminated by the ingredients in a dandruff shampoo that come in contact with it as you clean and rinse your hair (try this even if you don’t have dandruff in your scalp!).
  • Eat well. This means forsake (much of) the Saturday night pizza, Monday night chicken nuggets, Tuesday afternoon French fries, midweek cheeseburgers.… Change your diet to minimize fried, greasy foods and up your intake of fresh fruits and veggies so that your skin can benefit from the natural antioxidants. Great foods for teenage boys’ skin care are blueberries, spinach, kale, fish (not fish sticks!), baked sweet potatoes, whole-grain cereals and breads, and salad.
  • Drink up. Water, that is: ten glasses per day, or more, to flush out your system and keep your skin healthy.
  • Avoid using hair gels and mousse, as these can irritate the skin on your face.
  • Addicted to the phone? Get it off your face! Regular skin-to-phone contact causes germs, bacteria, and oils to build up and lead to acne! Switch to using the speakerphone button or text instead.
A good skin-care regimen isn't just for girls. Teenage boys, too, struggle with acne and can benefit from using these easy tips on adolescent skin care
